If you are applying for a mortgage, loan, assisted housing income, or state or local benefits,you may need social security benefit verification letter or proof of income letter from SSA.

  • Create or sign in to my Social Security account at www.ssa.gov/myaccount
  • On the Right side of the screen select Replacement Documents 
  • Select “get a Benefit Verification Letter” to tailor it to your needs 
  • Select Apply to Letter after finishing customizing
  • Print and save your personalized letter

When a person’s claim for benefits has been approved, the Social Security Administration (SSA) sends out an award letter or award notice.

Call Social Security and schedule an appointment if you need to replace your original award letter, you can request a copy by calling Social Security at 800-772-1213 or visiting your local SSA office. 

An award letter is not the same thing as a benefit verification letter (also called a proof of award letter, benefits letter, budget letter, or proof of income letter.)

You can also request proof that you have applied for benefits or proof that you have never received Social Security benefits or Supplemental Security Income.
