A sample bill of sale is a document that releases interest in a vehicle, helping to make your purchase safer and allowing the transaction to go more smoothly.

This is a important document that serves as:

  • Proof of purchase.
  • Protects your stance should any discrepancies arise over your vehicle's Governmental Services tax rate.
  • Not required for registering and titling.
  • Keep it in your records.
  • Purchase of cars, trucks, motorcycles, boats...

Steps and paperwork for having a safe purchase.

  • Make sure the title is signed-off.
  • Complete the VIN form. Have a vehicle identification number (VIN) inspection conducted by the DMV office or by a police officer.
  • Both the buyer and the seller must sign off in the appropriate sections of the bill of sale.
  • The seller must remove the license plates from the car and return them to the DMV.
  • Do not buy a vehicle that has an orange salvage title. It's illegal to sell salvage vehicles to private purchasers in most states.
  • The buyer is responsible for obtaining insurance and a MOVEMENT PERMIT (permit to operate the vehicle on public roads) from the DMV.
  • Statment that no alterations to the vehicle have been made.
  • Clear wording that identifies the city, town, county, and state where you are purchasing the vehicle.
